Excavator working on rural lot near Guelph

Excavation Service Areas Around Guelph and Wellington County

Guelph Excavation Pros sends every crew out from our yard in Guelph and takes on excavation work anywhere within about a 30-minute drive. That puts six communities in our regular rotation: Guelph, Puslinch, Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo and Milton.

Excavation rules change at each municipal boundary. A City of Guelph infill lot, a Puslinch acreage on septic and a Milton subdivision under Halton jurisdiction each answer to different permit offices, and they sit on different soils.

That is why each town has its own page with local permits, ground conditions and the jobs we do most there. Start with your community below, or use the tables to check our drive time and the offices that issue permits where you live.

Communities We Serve

We work regularly in these six communities. Each card sums up the work we see most there and links to a page with the local rules and conditions.

If your property sits near a boundary, check your property tax bill. The municipality named on it is the one whose by-laws and permit office apply to your dig.

Guelph

Our home base and busiest market: infill teardowns and new foundations, basement units and walkouts, and commercial site work in the business parks. Read about excavation in Guelph, including the City's site alteration and private tree rules.

Cambridge

Jobs across Galt, Preston and Hespeler, where older homes sit close to the Grand and Speed rivers and many lots fall inside GRCA floodplain mapping. See our Cambridge excavation services.

Kitchener

Secondary basement units, new-build foundations and service upgrades, often in the sands and gravels of the Waterloo Moraine on the city's west and south sides. See excavation in Kitchener.

Waterloo

Rental conversions near the universities, plus digs inside the Region of Waterloo's wellhead protection areas, where fuel and soil handling are tightly controlled. See Waterloo excavation work.

Puslinch

A rural township of private septic systems, wells and acreage lots, from Puslinch Lake to the Highway 6 and 401 corridor. Nearly every job here has to respect a septic bed or well setback. See excavation in Puslinch Township.

Milton

Heavy Halton clay, lots on and below the Niagara Escarpment, and fast-growing subdivisions in the east and south of town. It is the only town on our list in Halton Region, outside the Grand River watershed for most permits. See Milton excavation services.

Drive Times From Our Guelph Yard

Every community on this page is 35 minutes or less from our yard at 39 Royal Rd in Guelph. Short drives mean an early start on site and a same-day machine swap if the job calls for one.

Approximate weekday drive times from our Guelph yard
TownApprox. drive timeUsual route
Guelph5 to 20 minutesCity streets and the Hanlon Expressway (Highway 6)
Puslinch (Aberfoyle, Morriston)15 to 25 minutesHanlon Expressway south, then Brock Road (Wellington Road 46) or Highway 6
Cambridge20 to 30 minutesHanlon Expressway to Highway 401 west, exiting at Townline Road or Hespeler Road
Kitchener20 to 30 minutesHighway 7 west to Victoria Street or the Conestoga Parkway
Waterloo25 to 30 minutesHighway 7 west, then the Conestoga Parkway (Highway 85) north
Milton30 to 35 minutesHanlon Expressway to Highway 401 east, exiting at Guelph Line, Highway 25 or James Snow Parkway

Times are for a typical weekday morning and run longer in Highway 401 rush hour. Larger excavators travel on a float trailer, which we book a day ahead.

On multi-day jobs the machines stay parked on site overnight, so drive time only matters on the first and last day. Daily crew travel stays short because every town on the list is a direct highway run from the yard.

Who Issues Permits in Each Town

Up to three offices can be involved in a single excavation: the municipality for fill and grade changes, the building department for septic systems, and the conservation authority for land near rivers, wetlands and floodplains. The table shows who handles each one in our six towns.

Ontario One Call locates are required everywhere, and building permits for foundations, additions and walkouts always come from the local building department. Conservation authority permits are issued under O. Reg. 41/24; the GRCA permit page explains the process for most of our area.

The same job can need nothing but locates on one street and two permits on another. A backyard regrade beside Mill Creek in Puslinch, for example, may need a township site alteration permit and a GRCA permit before the first load of fill arrives.

Septic permits in every town follow Part 8 of the Ontario Building Code (O. Reg. 332/12). The system must be designed and installed by people registered under the Code qualification rules, which the building department checks at application.

Regional governments also play a part: the Region of Waterloo for road and water connections in Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo, and Halton Region for the same in Milton. By-laws and boundaries change, so we confirm the current requirements for each address before we quote.

Outside These Towns?

Yes, we take jobs anywhere within about a 30-minute drive of Guelph, even if your community does not have its own page here. These are the places we are asked about most.

Rockwood and the rest of Guelph/Eramosa Township are a 15 to 20 minute drive east. The township requires a site alteration permit for grade changes over 10 cm (4 in), a lower trigger than most of its neighbours.

Aberfoyle and Morriston are hamlets inside Puslinch Township, so the septic, well and permit details on our Puslinch page apply to them. Campbellville is part of Milton, which puts it under Conservation Halton and, close to the escarpment, Niagara Escarpment Commission control.

Fergus and Elora in Centre Wellington sit near the northern edge of our range, about 25 to 30 minutes away. We take on larger jobs there, such as septic replacements and new home foundations.

We also work in Arkell, Eden Mills, Ariss, Marden and Breslau. If you are unsure whether you are in range, send your address and we will confirm the drive time before booking a site visit.
