Excavation Services in Milton, ON From Our Guelph Base

Guelph Excavation Pros is an excavating contractor serving Milton from Guelph, about 30 minutes south on Highway 6 and east on Highway 401. We handle pools, grading, additions, service lines and rural lot work for Milton homeowners and builders. With 10+ years and 500+ jobs behind us, the same crews and machines we run at home come to your site.

Milton has grown faster than almost any town in Ontario, and most of that growth sits on heavy Halton till clay. Subdivisions such as Harrison, Ford and Willmott have compact, builder-graded backyards where water lingers after rain and the only way in is a narrow side yard.

West of the urban area the ground changes completely. Around Campbellville, Kelso and the old Nassagaweya township, Niagara Escarpment dolostone sits close to the surface, homes run on wells and septic, and much of the land falls under the Niagara Escarpment Plan.

Excavation Projects in Milton

Milton work splits three ways: new subdivisions, the older core and the rural west. Each needs different machines, different permits and a different plan for the soil we dig out.

Pools, Decks and Grading in Newer Subdivisions

Harrison, Ford, Willmott, Coates, Clarke, Beaty and Dempsey were built mostly from the early 2000s on, with small rear yards and swales set by the builder's grading plan. We dig pools, deck footings and patio bases with a mini excavator about 1 m wide, and move spoil out by compact loader or power barrow when the side yard is tight.

Changing grade along a rear-lot swale can flood the neighbour, so we work to the approved grading plan. Our pool excavation service includes haul-away, since Milton clay rarely suits pool backfill.

Old Milton Infill and Older Homes

Around Main Street, Martin Street and the Mill Pond, and in established areas such as Timberlea and Dorset Park, the work is renovation: waterproofing digs, additions, garage replacements and new water and sewer laterals.

Older laterals here are often clay tile or cast iron, and a new one has to meet Halton Region's main at the property line. We open the trench, lay PVC SDR 28 sewer pipe on bedding stone and restore the driveway; see our sewer and water line excavation service.

Rural Lots in Campbellville and Nassagaweya

Rural Milton, from Campbellville north through the old Nassagaweya township, runs on private wells and septic systems. We excavate septic replacements, new home foundations, long gravel driveways and building envelopes cleared through Escarpment bush.

Septic beds here often go in raised, because bedrock sits too close to the surface for an in-ground bed. Our septic excavation crews plan for rock and imported fill from the first site visit.

Halton Clay and Escarpment Rock

Urban Milton sits on Halton till, a dense, clay-rich glacial deposit that drains poorly and heaves with frost. Rural Milton to the west sits on, or just above, Niagara Escarpment dolostone, and most of our planning comes back to one of those two materials.

Halton clay holds water at the surface, so lawns stay soft for days and driveways on thin base rut and heave by spring. Our driveway excavation and base preparation undercuts soft clay, lays non-woven geotextile and builds on at least 300 mm of Granular B under 150 mm of Granular A, while footings go to at least 1.2 m (4 ft) for frost protection.

Near Campbellville, Kelso and the Escarpment brow, dolostone can show up within 0.5 to 2 m of the surface. When it does, we switch to a hydraulic hammer on the excavator, which can turn a one-day septic or pool dig into two to four days.

Milton Permits: Town, Region and the Niagara Escarpment

Up to four authorities can be involved in a Milton excavation, depending on where your lot sits. In rural Milton the order matters, because the Niagara Escarpment Commission permit must come before the Town's building permit.

Town of Milton Site Alteration By-law

Milton regulates placing, removing or cutting fill and changing grades or drainage under Site Alteration By-law 094-2022, in force since January 1, 2023. Large fill and grading jobs need a site alteration permit, and the exemptions in Section 3 of the by-law are specific, so we check them before importing any fill.

In subdivisions the bigger risk is altering grades set by the approved lot grading plan. We keep swales and elevations within the plan so the lot keeps draining as designed.

Niagara Escarpment Commission Development Permits

Much of rural Milton west of the urban boundary is in the Niagara Escarpment Plan area, and land in the Area of Development Control under O. Reg. 826/90 usually needs an NEC development permit. New homes, additions, ponds and grade changes, including bringing in soil, are typical triggers; exemptions are listed in O. Reg. 828/90.

The Town can only issue a building permit once the NEC permit is granted. The NEC development control rules explain what applies, and we allow extra weeks for it in the schedule.

Conservation Halton Regulated Areas

Sixteen Mile Creek and its branches run through the heart of Milton, feeding the Mill Pond downtown, and their valleys, floodplains and nearby wetlands are regulated by Conservation Halton under O. Reg. 41/24. Grading, building and placing or removing fill in those areas needs Conservation Halton permission.

Complete applications that meet policy are generally decided within 30 days, according to Conservation Halton's permitting page.

Halton Region Water and Wastewater Connections

Halton Region, not the Town, owns the water and wastewater system in Milton. Any new water or sanitary connection, or a change to an existing one, needs a Halton Region service permit before we dig to the main.

Rural projects deal with the Region too, since the Town's residential permit checklist lists a Halton Region well approval for new wells.

Why Milton Customers Book a Guelph Crew

Milton customers book us for three practical reasons: early starts, seven-day availability and rural experience. Leaving Guelph at 6:00am puts our trucks ahead of the worst Highway 401 congestion, so the machine is digging while GTA crews are still in traffic.

We answer calls and do site visits 7 days a week, which suits commuters who want to walk the yard with us on a Saturday or Sunday. Machine work follows the Town of Milton's noise by-law hours.

Rural lots are where a Guelph crew stands out. Septic systems, wells, rock and long driveways are weekly work for us across Wellington County, the same conditions Campbellville and Nassagaweya owners face.

Campbellville is about 25 minutes from our yard and central Milton about 30 to 35 minutes, via the Hanlon Expressway and Highway 401 or via Highway 7 and Highway 25 through Acton.

Milton Neighbourhoods We Serve

We work across urban and rural Milton, and the typical job follows the age of the neighbourhood and the ground under it.

Typical Milton Excavation Projects

Here are the Milton jobs we quote most often, with typical ranges for the excavation scope. Your fixed written quote follows a site visit.

  • Subdivision pool dig: $5,000 to $10,000 including clay haul-away; tight side-yard access adds 10% to 25%.
  • Rear-yard regrade and swale repair: $3,000 to $9,000, finished ready for sod.
  • Sewer or water lateral to the Region main: $6,000 to $15,000 depending on depth and driveway restoration.
  • Rural septic replacement with raised bed: $30,000 to $55,000, more where rock must be broken.
  • Hydraulic hammer rock breaking: $200 to $300 per hour of breaking time.

Clay disposal is a real cost in Milton. Wet Halton clay is heavy, receiving sites often want it tested, and larger volumes fall under Ontario's excess soil rules, O. Reg. 406/19, so trucking and tipping are itemised in every quote.

Milton Excavation FAQs

Quick answers to what Milton homeowners and builders ask before booking.

Do I need a Niagara Escarpment permit for work in Campbellville?

Often, yes. Much of the land around Campbellville is in the NEC Area of Development Control, where new homes, additions, ponds and grade changes usually need an NEC development permit before the Town issues a building permit.

Check your property on the NEC's interactive map or ask NEC staff, since some minor work is exempt under O. Reg. 828/90.

Why does my Milton yard stay wet after rain?

Because Halton till clay drains very slowly, so water that cannot run off sits on the surface. Settled builder grading, blocked swales and downspouts emptying onto flat lawn make it worse.

Fixes range from regrading the swale back to plan to adding a French drain or a rear-yard catch basin. Our grading and levelling service covers each option.

Can you fit equipment into a small Milton backyard?

Usually, yes. Our smallest mini excavator is about 1 m (39 in) wide, so a gate or side yard of about 1.1 m (43 in) is enough, and we lay ground mats to protect the lawn.

Where the side yard is narrower or shared, we can sometimes reach in from a neighbour's yard with their written permission, or use smaller loaders and power barrows.

How long does it take you to reach Milton?

About 30 minutes. Milton sits at the edge of our regular service radius, so we book Milton jobs as full days and travel never cuts into dig time.
